The guest house here in the palace grounds brings together a harmonious combination of great comfort, extraordinary architecture, and a natural environment. Surrounded by villas from Berlin’s Gründerzeit and not far from “Schönhausen”, the former pleasure palace of Prussian queens, this former guest house of the German Democratic Republic, built in the modernist tradition of architectural design, is waiting to welcome you.
The spacious, loft-like family suite with its strikingly self-confident aesthetics extends across an area of 140 m² of living space, and is characterised by great elegance and a light-filled indoor atmosphere. The building, which stands within the outer limits of the palace grounds, was completed in 1968 and is now a listed building. One enters it via the vestibule, which is provided with marble flooring and wall panels of zebrawood and cherry.
Facing the sun, the ground floor opens out into an extensive well-proportioned suite with three living rooms, two bathrooms and various side rooms. This used to be the smaller dining room of the guest house. With its magnificent 60 m² of glazing, natural light falls onto even the most distant areas of the dwelling. The well-thought-out modifications which were made to the floor plan during the sensitive renovation of the property have resulted in a design which is entirely compatible with modern needs. In the entrance area of the suite there is a superbly well-renovated bathroom with a shower and toilet and a room which is suited for use as either a bedroom or a study. This is followed by the lounge-like living and dining area with a total area of approx. 70 m², of which around 50 m² is reserved purely for relaxation and enjoyment. The ceiling-high rosewood panelling lends the entire ensemble of rooms a dignified ambience. The designer kitchen area, fitted out in a striking, cool black and equipped to a superb standard, leads around the wellness cube which has, among other things, two washbasins, a bath, and a dressing room. The sequence of rooms is completed by the second bedroom, which is a good 13 m² in size. Here, too, there are high windows, which in this case face the setting sun. As in all rooms, blinds provide protection from stray glances and intense sunlight.
From the living area, one steps outside onto a slightly raised outdoor seating area of a good 8.6 m² which overlooks the large open area in front of the building, providing a view of the leafy surroundings. A few short steps across the park-like garden, with its lawns and collection of mature trees, takes you to the patio area which belongs to the suite. Other exclusive functional areas are to be found inside the house, such as the 8 m² storage room and, last but not least, the parking space in the underground garage.
The guest house has a unique location in Schlosspark Schönhausen, facing the baroque former estate of the Hohenzollerns. The immediate area has all sorts of shops, nursery schools, primary and secondary schools and public transport stations. The city centre is just about 8 km away, and the sliproad onto the A114 motorway is just 3.5 km away. The surrounding area is very green, with plenty of opportunities for sport and recreation.
